Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has admitted defeat in his attempt to sell the troubled Championship club and took it off the market on Tuesday night after failing to find a buyer prepared to match his £80million asking price. Ashley moved quickly to reclaim control of Newcastle, promising to invest an extra £20m this week, and appointing caretaker boss Chris Hughton as his permanent manager, handing him an 18-month contract and ending Alan Shearer's slim chances of returning to the club.
