Plans for new Spurs stadium move step nearer

Tottenham Hotspur's bid to build "the most fan-friendly stadium in Europe" moved a step closer on Monday when the club submitted detailed plans of the new ground to their local council. The stadium, to be built almost exactly on the site of White Hart Lane, will have a capacity of 56,250 including a new single-tier stand comprising 63 rows of seats. The development also includes a hotel and more than 400 homes. The new stadium, expected to be completed in 2012, is a potential venue to be included in England's 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement: "Our desire from the outset has been to create a scheme of major benefit for local people and to deliver the most fan-friendly stadium in Europe. "The inclusion of a new single-tier stand combined with a fantastic stadium design demonstrates our absolute commitment to create the most atmospheric stadium for our supporters." Spurs have played at White Hart Lane since 1899 but the new stadium will be known by the name of whichever sponsor eventually buys the naming rights. White Hart Lane has had a capacity of 36,000 for the last decade although Spurs have 70,000 registered club members and a 23,000-plus waiting list for season tickets. (Editing by Tony Jimenez)
