England v Belarus: Steven Gerrard out of World Cup qualifier

David James was the only absentee from the 23-man squad to take part in training but the Portsmouth goalkeeper has not been sent back to his club. Gerrard was replaced midway through the 1-0 defeat against Ukraine on Saturday after suffering a groin injury. It was hoped Gerrard would be fit enough to start at Wembley, but Fabio Capello has confirmed Gerrard will not take part at Wembley. Related ArticlesInjuries force Capello to rethink England attackFabio Capello's 10 striking optionsLampard: 'golden generation' tag a burdenRooney-shaped hole a void England will struggle to fillOwen called up by Capello.for after-partyBarry's 'hunger' to regain England placeAston Villa's James Milner replaced Gerrard against Ukraine and is likely to start for England against Belarus. Wayne Rooney has already returned to Manchester United after a picking up a minor strain in Dnipro. Rooney's absence could give Gabby Agbonlahor a rare start in attack and Gareth Barry, his former captain at Aston Villa, believes the striker will not let England down. "Gabby has hit the ground running at the start of this season not just with his work-rate and the way he plays for the team but he is getting the goals now which he has sometimes been criticised for not doing," said Barry. "I'm confident that if he gets his chance, which will be his first chance at home because his previous caps have come away from home, it will be a difficult game for him but one in which he will be capable of doing a good job in."
