The Mariners boss has seen his side defeated in their last three League Two matches as they have slipped to third from bottom of the table.
But the Liverpudlian celebrated a year in charge at Blundell Park with a victory at his former club Hartlepool in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night and hopes Town can now build some momentum.
"The league is the priority but winning a one-off game like that can transmit to the league as it gives you a boost," said Newell.
"Hopefully we can build on that result at Hartlepool and start winning matches in the league again."
