Guthrie staying positive

The Magpies were held at St James' Park for the second time in four days after their 0-0 draw with Bristol City on Saturday. The result followed Wednesday's 1-1 draw with QPR and, after title rivals West Brom were held at Preston, Newcastle failed to extend their lead at the top of the Championship.Nonetheless, the Toon remain three points clear but Guthrie feels they played well enough to claim victory against the Robins, who had heroic keeper Dean Gerken to thank for the point.Gap"Going into the international break, we have a three-point gap. It's a nice feeling, but it could have been five if we had just nicked a goal," Guthrie said."We have had a couple of draws at home, which is disappointing. We played well on Saturday - we didn't play so well against QPR."We are always expected to win, but we are not going to win every game."But the most important thing is we didn't lose and we kept the gap."The game was marred by referee Graham Salisbury's decision not to award a penalty to the hosts after Marlon Harewood appeared to be hauled down by City's Jamie McCombe.Designated penalty taker Guthrie believes the spot-kick should have been given but is refusing to dwell on the matter.Move on"Marlon said it was a stonewaller - he took his standing leg," he said."Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't and we move on. Hopefully we will get one we don't deserve."Guthrie missed a penalty in the draw with QPR but revealed he remains on penalty-taking duty and was prepared to take it, had Salisbury given the decision in their favour."I was still on it. I wanted to put things right if I was given the chance. I was about to run up to the ball," he said."I thought the referee was going to blow, but he didn't. Hopefully next time."
