The 26-year-old former Reading and Chelsea player has missed the last two games with a thigh injury.
Manager Martin O'Neill told the club's website: "Steve is improving. We will take it lightly for the first couple of days but I am hoping that he would be all right."
Monday's game, however, is again likely to come too soon for defender Luke Young, who is still to feature this season due to a thigh problem.
O'Neill feels the first game after the next international break, against Chelsea on October 17, is a more realistic target.
He said: "Luke is doing really well. He is improving his fitness and his mental strength each week. I would reckon after the break, you would think he would putting himself forward and be in strong contention."
