Finnigan: Bairns need cup fillip

The memory of the Bairns' 1-0 victory over FC Vaduz in the first leg of their Europa League second qualifier in July was quickly erased by the 2-1 aggregate defeat against the Liechtenstein minnows.Eddie May's side have yet to recover from that embarrassing European exit and are bottom of the SPL after five games, doubling their points tally with the goalless draw at Hamilton on Saturday.Last season, under John Hughes, Falkirk reached the semi-final of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup and the final of the Scottish Cup - losing both to Rangers.Finnigan, 22, hopes a continuation of that relative cup success will help get their season up and running when they welcome the Hoops to the Falkirk stadium on Wednesday."We did very well last season in the cups and we want to progress again," the Englishman said."Obviously getting Celtic in the cup is not ideal but all you can do is go out there and give it your best."It would be nice to get a win against them at any point but they would be a nice scalp on Wednesday."But we will address it as any other game, we have a day's rest and a couple of days to prepare for it and we look forward to it."Finnigan was denied his second goal of the season at New Douglas Park when referee Willie Collum adjudged him to have pushed Accies defender Martin Canning before heading Sean Lynch's cross past Tomas Cerny. The former Newcastle player accepts the lack of goals - just three in five SPL matches - have been the problem for May's side this term."We had a lot of chances against Accies and we have to take those chances to win games," Finnigan said."It's been a problem in the last few games."We have played really well in defence in the last two games to keep clean sheets but it's up to us to go forward and make sure we get the goals to get three points."Billy Reid was "devastated" for Accies striker Derek Lyle, who sustained a serious cruciate knee ligament injury in the first minute of the match which will keep him out for the rest of the season. The Accies boss believes that was the low point of a depressing afternoon for the Lanarkshire side.He said: "I said to the players that it wasn't a good day for us and we move on."We wanted to take three points and we played better in the second half but we huffed and puffed."
