McGhee backs Burley to keep job

Burley is fighting to save his job after failing to get the country into the play-offs for next summer's World Cup.The 53-year-old is set for a crunch meeting with his Scottish Football Association bosses next week, where he will try to convince them he is taking the team in the right direction.McGhee went head to head with Burley and Graeme Souness for the Scotland job back in January last year and would doubtless love the opportunity to manage his country. But he believes axing Burley now would be completely counter-productive because it would waste the experience he gained from the World Cup campaign, with whoever takes over likely to have to start again from square one."I think that there has been a big investment in George in this World Cup campaign in terms of his experience," McGhee told BBC Scotland.Former Scotland striker McGhee saw enough signs of improvement in the final two Group Nine matches against Macedonia and Holland in the past week to be convinced of Burley's credentials. He said: "He has now got a group of players who, for me, clearly are behind George, the way they played in these two games - the second half against Macedonia and the way they played against Holland."You can see that they're playing for George. I think he has them, he has the dressing room."I think tactically against Holland they were different class."The changes he made against Macedonia won them the game."George has shown a lot over this period and I think it would be a shame if they now discarded that to allow someone else to come in and have to go through the same process."So, for me, George is the man. He should go into the European Championships and be given the opportunity to use the experience he has gained in the World Cup campaign." Falkirk v Aberdeen. Click here to bet.
