Martinez: We can turn it around

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is confident he will rediscover the winning formula when his players return from the international break. After an opening day 2-0 Barclays Premier League victory at Aston Villa the Latics have lost their last four matches - including an embarrassing 4-1 Carling Cup reverse at Championship side Blackpool. Having failed to strengthen his squad on transfer deadline day after unsuccessful bids for Swansea's Ferrie Bodde and Valladolid's Alvaro Rubio, Martinez has the next nine days to figure out where his side have been going wrong. The break has probably come at the right time for the Spaniard, managing in his maiden top-flight season, as pressure was beginning to grow. And although a number of players are away for World Cup qualifiers it will not prevent Martinez working on a few things. "It is not ideal when you lose up to nine players on international duty," he said. "But we can work with the other players and I think it is important the intensity of our play can be looked at in this period. "Those periods allow you to work behind the scenes and it is important you get the right balance; players switching off and recovering well and just getting ready."
