Premier League season: 1993-94
The second season of the recently formed FA Premiership, known then as the Carling Premiership.Having lifted the trophy in the first Premier League season, Manchester United were keen to hold onto the Title, their first in 26 years. They spent money to strengthen their squad by breaking the English transfer record to bring in Roy Keane from recently relegated Nottingham Forest. Forest along with Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough dropped down to the First Division and were replaced by Newcastle United who were relegated in 1989 and West Ham United, relegated the season before the start of the Premier League. The third and final new addition was Swindon Town who had never played top division football before.Swindon struggled to cope with the higher standards of the Premier League and instantly found themselves down at the bottom of the division. It just wasn't to be for The Robins, they finished rock bottom and conceded 100 goals in total during the season.It was a season of struggle for Tottenham, Manchester City, Everton, Southampton and Ipswich Town. But in the end it was Sheffield United and Oldham Athletic who joined Swindon in the drop zone.Newly promoted Newcastle United competed with the two biggest underachievers of the previous season, Arsenal and Leeds in the race for European qualification places. Newcastle claimed 3rd place and a UEFA cup spot, while Arsenal finished 4th but were winners of the UEFA Cup Winners Cup tournament by defeating Parma in the final.It was 92-93 League Champions Manchester United who once again lead the division for much of the season, eventually finishing 8 points clear of Blackburn Rovers.
