David de Gea: I wasn't dropped over Tesco doughnut incident

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has lifted the lid over the storm which saw him accused of stealing a doughnut at a supermarket. The Spain Under 21 international insisted the incident was a huge misunderstanding in an attempt to laugh off the embarrassing episode. Speaking out: De Gea has broken his silence over doughnut-gate De Gea, who arrived at Old Trafford earlier this summer in a ?17.8million deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid, claimed he intended to pay for the ?1.19 Krispy Kreme treat before realising he had left his wallet in his car. Security staff at the Tesco Express in Altrincham, in Greater Manchester, collared the 20-year-old after he apparently scoffed down the doughnut in the aisle. But De Gea said: 'Nothing really happened. 'Me, my cousin and a friend from Spain went to the shop, we were hungry and took the doughnuts. In the sticks: The United stopper has dismissed the incident as a misunderstanding 'We we going to buy more things. I realised I didn't have my wallet so I went out to the car to get it. Nothing more.' De Gea admitted he had a lucky escape after a Spanish compatriot helped him explain the situation after being monitored on the store's CCTV. 'They thought that I was leaving without paying so I tried to explain to them but my English is still notvery good and we were there for a while,' he told The Sun. 'In the end a Spanish girl arrived and we understood each other and in the end they ended up apologising to us. On the bench: De Gea was left out of United's starting line-up 'They made a big thing out of nothing but I took the whole thing as something funny.' The young keeper did not play in last weekend's 2-0 win over Norwich but is hoping to return to the United starting XI for their Barclays Premier League trip to Anfield after the international break . De Gea was rested in favour of rival Anders Lindegaard but denied he was dropped over the doughnut incident. 'Absloutely not true,' he said. 'They're not going to drop me for a doughnut. 'The manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] is the one that decides. 'He rotates players a lot and when he thinks it's the right thing to do, he leaves you on the bench.' It did not stop his Old Trafford team-mates from teasing him, however, with De Gea the butt of jokes at club's Carrington training ground last week. He added: 'A few of my team-mates gave me a few doughnuts as a joke. 'But I took it in good humour and thought the whole thing was funny.'  Manchester United 2 Norwich 0: Anderson and Welbeck keep United on topSticky-fingered United keeper De Gea caught stealing doughnut from TescoWelbeck: I have become a man and look forward to scoring goals galore for UnitedAll the latest Manchester United news, features and opinion
