McClaren quits Forest hot-seat

Steve McClaren has resigned as Nottingham Forest manager following a poor start to the Championship season for the East Midlands side. Forest lost 3-1 at home to Birmingham on Sunday and lie just one place above the relegation zone, with eight points from 10 matches.McClaren failed to face the media after the game as he was locked in talks with chairman Nigel Doughty after another disappointing day at the City Ground - the defeat to Blues putting a miserable seal on a horror week.McClaren resigned after that meeting and has endured a torrid run since taking over in June, epitomised by Tuesday's 5-1 hammering at Burnley. After being dismissed as England manager following a poor run, McClaren rebuilt his reputation by guiding FC Twente to the Eredivisie title. He traded Holland for Germany soon after, with an unsuccessful spell at Wolfsburg preceding him taking the reins at Forest.Doughty eventually left the ground some two hours after the final whistle but refused to answer questions about the former England boss, who had less than four months in the job.For more than an hour of the game, Forest were ahead and looking set for their first home win of the season. They led through a 35th-minute header by Ishmael Miller after Matt Derbyshire had flicked on a corner by Lewis McGugan.Without being in any way fluent Forest seemed well in control until Chris Burke changed the entire complex of the game with a thunderbolt 30-yard effort that flew past Forest keeper Lee Camp in the 76th minute.Four minutes later, Keith Fahey and Burke linked effectively to give substitute Chris Wood the chance to edge Birmingham ahead. And, two minutes from time, Wood slid home his second goal of the match after Forest skipper Luke Chambers had failed to cut out a simple ball into the heart of the home defence.Birmingham manager Chris Hughton said: "In football you need a spark and Chris provided that for us with an exceptional strike."It gave us something to build on and the players sensed then they could go on and win the match. It would have been easy to settle for a point but the players wanted to push forward."We also had players in Chris Wood and Marlon King to come off the bench and influence the game and that's what they did."It has given us all a big boost in confidence because we've had some tough games this season but to come back and win at The City Ground shows that we have a lot of character in the side."What we have to do now is find some consistency and start games in a lot better way."But we can enjoy three very good points tonight because with Europe it's been a tough week. But to record two away wins is very pleasing and rewarding."
