THE LIST: Sportsmail's top 50 football signings of the summer - Nos 40-31

The transfer window will slam shut on September 1 to mark the end of a summer of madness. Clubs across Europe have been frantically reinforcing their squads as they prepare for another tough season. There have been several blockbuster signings. Real Madrid have undoubtedly led the way by splashing out around £170millon on Kaka, Karim Benzema and, of course, Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo. Elsewhere, Manchester City have emerged as the new hot destination as Mark Hughes spends his club's new riches. But it is not just the expensive acquisitions that stand out. Michael Owen is one of a number of players to switch clubs on a Bosman free transfer. As the days count down to the end of the latest spell of spending, Sportsmail has put together the top 50 signings of the summer by European clubs. If you disagree with our choices, let us know your star buy by leaving your comments. 40 Pavel Pogrebnyak (Zenit St Petersburg to Stuttgart, £9m) The Russian international had a devastating two season spell at Zenit, scoring 22 goals in 58 matches. Blackburn and Bolton showed interest in the 25-year-old but Stuttgart will be glad they stole his signature after he scored one and made another on his debut. 39 Nenad Milijas (Red Star Belgrade to Wolves, £2.6m) The lofty midfielder bagged a remarkable 22 goals last season, Mick McCarthy said 'I'll have some of that' and his faith in the Serbian instantly paid off as he set up Wolves' first goal of the Premier League season. 38 Bafetimbi Gomis (St Etienne to Lyon, 12.5m) One of those players constantly linked with a move somewhere or other and, in the end, the striker moved between the Rhone Derby rivals. Starting to make a name for himself in the France national side bagging a brace on his debut. 37 Michel Bastos (Lille to Lyon, £15.7m) Bastos opened his account for Lyon with an absolute screamer in the Champions League qualifier against Anderlecht. His playing style is much like all Brazilian defenders - always looking to attack. 36 Obafemi Martins (Newcastle to Wolfsburg, £9m) The Nigerian striker proved himself as a decent striker in the Premier League so it comes as a surprise that he's moved to Germany. Will prosper, no doubt, as this man knows where the goal is. 35 Stephen Hunt (Reading to Hull, £2.5m) Phil Brown was a big fan of Hunt so shelled out for the Irish midfielder only for him to go and score on his debut, past Petr Cech. Which, given the history between the two, was a little nasty. 34 Raul Albiol (Valencia to Real Madrid, £13m) Featuring regularly for Spain, he is seen as a successor to Barcelona's Carlos Puyol in the national team. A remarkable purchase given Florentino Perez's policy of purchasing every attacking player who has kicked a ball this summer. 33 Jonathan Greening (West Brom to Fulham, loan) The 'almost man' of football - didn't quite make it at Manchester United, didn't make an appearance for England - but now has a chance to prove his worth as Roy Hodgson's Fulham go on a European tour. 32 Peter Crouch (Portsmouth to Tottenham, £10m) Redknapp has always been a fan of Crouch - he's got a good touch for a big lad, you know - in fact, he likes him so much, he has bought him twice. The personification of 'different option up front.' 31 Alberto Aquilani (Roma to Liverpool, £20m) Who's more famous, Alberto or his wife? As numerous lads mags ponder Aquilani's wife, Rafa Benitez gets to enjoy the abilities of one of Europe's most rated midfielders.
