Brazilian defender Sylvinho signs for Man City

Manchester City signed 35-year-old Brazilian left back Sylvinho on a one-year contract on Monday. Sylvinho, who played in the Champions League final for Barcelona last season before being released, returns to the English Premier League after two seasons with Arsenal from 1999 to 2001. Abu Dhabi-owned City have spent millions strengthening their strike force during pre-season, signing the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Carlos Tevez, and manager Mark Hughes believes Sylvinho will bolster his side's defence. "Sylvinho has a wealth of experience at the very top level, having represented Brazil and played for some of the very top clubs in Europe," Hughes told City's website (www.mcfc.co.uk). "When the chance presented itself to bring him to Manchester City as a free agent I saw it as representing excellent business for us. Sylvinho won the European Cup last season at Barcelona and he will strengthen our defensive options." City have also agreed a fee with Everton for defender Joleon Lescott who was undergoing a medical on Monday.
