Transfer window: What happened at Wigan

Well the window is now closed until January and no doubt Roberto Martinez and his team will now be ready to get on with the season. Here is what happened at the DW Stadium. Confirmed signings Shaun Maloney The 28 year old Celtic winger/striker joined on deadline day for a fee believed to be in the region of £1 million. Maloney has previous Premier League experience with Aston Villa and adds much needed strength and depth to the forward line up. Whilst not a direct replacement for Charles N'Zogbia, Maloney will certainly add plenty of skill and craft ot the forward play in something of a Tom Cleverley mould He is also somewhat of a set piece specialist. Albert Crusat Roberto Martinez highlughted this movement as his number one in terms of importance. Of all the signings, Crusat would seemingly be the replacement for N'Zogbia. The 29 year old Spaniard has joined for £2 million from Almeria who were forced to sell following relegation from La Liga last summer. The small winger has plenty of pace and skill and his addition is much needed to take some of the pressure from the shoulders of Victor Moses. Patrick Van Aanholt The 21 year old Dutchman has joined on a season long loan deal from Chelsea and will provide cover for Maynor Figueroa at left back. Van Aanholt is a under 21 international for Holland and has amassed more than 40 Championship appearances during previous loan spells with Newcastle United, Coventry, and Leicester City. The ones that got away Shaun Wright Phillips The 29 year old has joined Queens Park Rangers for a fee believed to be in the region of £6.5 million as the R's out-bidded the Latics for the former England international. With Maloney costing in the region of £1 million the saving of £5.5 million made by Roberto Martinez appears very shrewd to say the least. Wright-Phillips is also said to have been keen on returning to London. Giovani Dos Santos This was a very late burning with the Latics said to have been expressing and interest in the out-of-favour midfielder at the eleventh hour. The move did not materialise as terms could not be agreed on a deal. Tottenham wanted to offload on a permanent basis whilst the Latics were keen on an initial loan switch. Mexican international Dos Santos was said to be eyeing a move to Sevilla but that did not come to fruition either. Valdimir Weiss The 21 year old winger was wanted on a permanent basis by Roberto Martinez who has been impressed with the youngsters progress during recent loan spells with Rangers and Bolton Wanderers. However the young winger chose to move to Villarreal on a season long loan deal from Manchester City. Jean Beausejour Another late burner that failed to materialise was a speculative offer for Birmingham City's Chilean international winger Jean Beausejour. This offer was believed to be somewhat tentative with Roberto Martinez testing the water with regards to City's desperation to sell following relegation from the Premier League. The Blues are said to have wanted to recopu a large portion of the £2 million they paid for the winger with the Latics only offering upto £500k. Peter Odemwingie Following on from the bid earlier in the month, there was no follow up interest from the Latics in the striker after he signed a new deal with West Brom. Leaving the club Hugo Rodallaga Stoke City were said to have expressed an interest in the Latics striker again this transfer window and Arsenal were also linked following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. The Gunners chose to move for Mikael Arteta of Everton and Stoke City added Peter Crouch of Tottenham. Roberto Martinez had said earlier in the day that Rodallega would not be leaving the club and so it proved. Ronnie Stam There were late rumours that Ronnie Stam was having a medical at PSV Eindhoven in Holland regarding a £2 million move back to the Ere Divisie. However the rumours proved untrue and following theinjury to Antolin Alcaraz, Roberto Martinez is keen to give further first team exposure to the Dutch full back as Emmerson boyce may move across to centre back. Summary With Crusat and Maloney the Latics have added much needed skill to the front line to support the talent already at the club. What the duo lack in physical stature, they more than make up for in talent and it will be interesting to see how quickly the pair can adapt to the Premier League. The addition of Van Aanholt adds much needed strength in depth to the defence and there is also one loan spot spare for the January transfer window if needed. All in all this window has again been a successful one for the Latics with lots of talent coming through the door for a relatively small outlay. The money received for Charles N'Zogbia can also be re-invested in improving the training facilities, a big target for Martinez.
