Not all doom and gloom - Davis
Steven Davis insists no-one at Rangers is pushing the panic button despite disappointing starts in both their domestic and European campaigns. The Scottish champions began their defence of the SPL title with a 1-1 home draw against Hearts last weekend.Ally McCoist's men then slumped to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Malmo, also at Ibrox, leaving their hopes of progressing to the group stage in the balance.Davis is well aware that those results were simply not good enough in the eyes of their fans and he admits victory at St Johnstone on Saturday is crucial.The 26-year-old said: "It's important as far as the league is concerned. Even though it's such an early stage of the season, it's important that we pick up the three points."It will be another difficult game for us away from home but we need to go there and put on a good performance and start building the confidence for future games."We know we are better than what we have shown so far and it's just a case of going out and doing it on the pitch."It's not all doom and gloom yet - it's only the start of the season but we need to get a good result tomorrow."From the players' point of view, we are not getting down about it."Everybody recognises that we have had two disappointing results and it's not what we were looking for."But if we can get the season off to a good start tomorrow hopefully we can carry that into next Wednesday's game in Malmo."Asked if there had been an over-reaction to their opening two matches, Davis said: "You get that, playing for either side of the Old Firm."You are either flying or it's all doom and gloom. The players don't get carried away either way."We will just concentrate on each game and hopefully start picking up the results that we need."Rangers are boosted by the news that new signing Dorin Goian is eligible for the trip to Perth after being granted a work permit and international clearance.But Davis concedes that Rangers probably need more new faces in the squad as soon as possible.He said: "I think everybody recognises that we need some players in and the management are working hard to try to do that."It's a difficult time of year to try to get people in, with the season kicking off so early. Hopefully we can add to the players who are already here."
