Vaughan eyes central spot

Sunderland's summer recruit David Vaughan hopes to adopt a role in the middle of the park for his new club this season. The former Blackpool man has been ear-marked as a potential candidate to fill the team's problematic left side of their midfield.Manager Steve Bruce has used three players in the position in three of their pre-season friendlies, indicating the position is up for grabs. Vaughan was given a wide berth with the likes of Real Sociedad and Crewe, but he wants to stick to the middle of the park for The Black Cats."I didn't play much on the left at Blackpool. The last couple of years, I've been playing in the middle," he told the Sunderland Echo."The gaffer probably just gave me a run-out on the left the other night to try something. But hopefully I can play regularly in the middle."Up until the last couple of years, I always played on the left. But Ian Holloway switched me as soon as he came to Blackpool."Personally, I think that's my best position and that's where I've played consistently."
