Everton knock back £10m Arseal bid for Phil Jagielka

Top target: Arsenal want Phil JagielkaArsenal have had a ?10million bid for Phil Jagielka knocked back by Everton.Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been tracking Jagielka for some time and he sees the England international as the ideal partner for Thomas Vermaelen. But the Toffees are standing their ground, just as they did when Wenger bid ?12m for Jagielka last summer.Goodison Park manager David Moyes has singled out Jagielka as a future Everton captain and tied the 28-year-old down to a four-year deal in March. But Everton's finances leave them vulnerable and Moyes knows he will have to consider selling one of his star players if Wenger returns with a bid closer to ?18m.Jagielka signed a new four-year contract in March, and is being reportedly earmarked as a potential successor to Phil Neville as Everton captain.Wenger is known to be a big admirer of the Sale-born centre-back, whose stock has risen considerably since his move from Sheffield United in 2007.He was named Toffees player of the season in 2008/09, even though he suffered a knee injury in the second half of the campaign that ruled him out of the FA Cup Final, and has eight international caps to his name.Arsenal have not had much luck in the transfer market this summer, with Gael Clichy sealing a switch rivals Manchester City amid daily rumours of potential moves for key duo Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. The French boss is desperate to bolster his defence, with a centre-back top of his priorities. Fan-fare: Everton supporters would not want to see Phil Jagielka leave Goodison Park The Gunners have been linked with Bolton's Gary Cahill, Blackburn's Chris Samba and Scott Dann at Birmingham.Dann has also been touted as a potential replacement for Jagielka should he move to the Emirates Stadium.Arsenal's only business this summer has been the ?10.6m arrival of Gervinho and the ?1m capture of Carl Jenkinson.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR FREE FANTASY FOOTBALL GAMEFabregas to miss Arsenal's trip to Germany as transfer saga rumbles onClub-by-club guide to all the Barclays Premier League summer transfersPhiladelphia Union 1 Everton 0: Heitinga sees red as Toffees melt in the sunAll the latest Arsenal news, features and opinionAll the latest Everton news, features and opinion
