Whelan hopes fans know RM value

Fans who wanted Wigan to sack manager Roberto Martinez last season have not been forgotten by club chairman Dave Whelan. Some Latics supporters were calling for the head of Martinez while the team were sitting in the bottom three of the Premier League.Whelan not only stood by the Spaniard but insists he would have left the club as well had Martinez buckled under the pressure. Martinez repaid his chairman's loyalty when he refused to join Aston Villa after the Midlands club made him their top target to replace Gerard Houllier before appointing Alex McLeish."It was only six months ago that we had people in the crowd asking for him to get the sack, don't forget that," Whelan said. "He's done a first-class job since the day he arrived. It upsets you and I would have gone with Roberto, no question. "I think the people have now realised how good a manager he is."
