Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish jumps to the defence of Director of Football Damien Comolli

ShareKenny Dalglish believes his relationship with Damien Comolli must flourish in order for Liverpool to start fighting for top honours once more. There have been queries raised as to what the dynamics will be between Dalglish, who was made Liverpool's permanent manager on Thursday, and director of football Comolli. Side-by-side: Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli Comolli was drafted in by Fenway Sports Group to help Liverpool make better signings but even though he is a hugely influential figure, Dalglish will have the final say on new arrivals. It has been suggested that might lead to tension down the line but Dalglish has brushed those fears aside and insists Comolli will prove to be a massive help to him. 'The director of football is a much maligned title but it's only maligned if you don't understand it,' said Dalglish. 'I fully understand and appreciate the work Damien has done - and will continue to do - for the club. It's hugely beneficial for a manager to have somebody who does that work. 'Damien did a fantastic job in January. Luis (Suarez) was coming in anyway but to get Andy (Carroll) in at the last minute was a great piece of business. 'We will work together, make decisions together, have discussions together, and we'll sign players and try to push the club onwards and upwards.'Dalglish and Comolli will oversee a clear out that will include Paul Konchesky, Christian Poulsen, Milan Jovanovic and possibly even Joe Cole and Daniel Agger. One man who will not be leaving, though, is goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who has ended talk about his future by revealing the lift Dalglish's appointment has given him. 'I am looking forward to next season,' said Reina, who was wanted by Arsenal.
