Sawyer stays a Shrimper: 'I'd like to think I've shown glimpses of what I am capable of'

Southend United midfielder and former Chelsea youth Lee Sawyer has signed a one-year contract extension with an option of a further year after leaving Woking. Sawyer: 'Grateful to Southend for giving me another chance' The 21-year-old Shrimpers midfielder Lee Sawyer moved back to Southend for a third time back in January on a free transfer from Blue Square South side Woking on a deal until the end of the present campaign. Lee had made 14 appearances this term before an ankle injury ended his season last month. Sawyer told www.southendunited.co.uk: "I'm really pleased to be staying for a further 12 months. When I joined at the start of the year I was very grateful to Southend for giving me another chance so I didn't hesitate in signing this deal. I'd like to think I've shown glimpses of what I am capable of before I got injured. That was really frustrating as I was just starting to establish myself again in the side. But I know with a full pre-season behind me that I'll hopefully be back to the player of old." And we all hope for that, a fit and healthy Lee can only be positive for Blues boss Paul Sturrock, if he can only get him to find the back of the net more often instead of passing back to the opposition keeper!Anyway Sturrock added: "I've been pleased with the way Lee has come into the side and performed. Off the pitch he has been no problems at all and on it he has shown glimpses that he can be a player for us. He now just needs to learn to play the game the way I like it played and he will be a real asset next season."Indeed he will, let's hope there's more good news to come in the following weeks. He's back, again:www.southendunited-mad.co.uk/news/tmnw/lee_sawyer_returns_to_southend_united_being_released_by_chelsea_was_a_real_kick_up_the_backside_621746/index.shtmlHe always loved us really:www.southendunited-mad.co.uk/news/tmnw/shrimpers_sawyer_spreads_the_love_i_still_had_a_spot_for_southend_united_in_my_heart_621989/index.shtml
