Weir keeps focus on Ibrox agenda

But the veteran defender has told national team boss George Burley he is still willing to represent the Scots in future if called upon despite his absence from the squad named on Tuesday. The 39-year-old was in impressive form as he grabbed a last-minute winner in Wednesday night's pre-season friendly against Manchester City but it has been a week of mixed emotions for the Rangers captain. "Of course it is disappointing not to be selected for the Norway game," he said. "I have made myself available and he has not picked me. I can't really say more than that. I never expect anything in football. "I've obviously not been first choice since he became manager so it wasn't a big surprise to me. I've just got to play as well as I can for Rangers and see what happens from there. "It's not my decision whether I win any more Scotland caps but I will still be available. I want to play in every game and that's not changed. "But I've not been picked this time. The manager gets paid to make these decisions and has to live or die by them." The clash with City looked set to end all square with Nacho Novo and Kenny Miller netting for Rangers and Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov on the scoresheet for the Premier League side. But Weir ensured it was a triumphant night for the Scottish champions when he fired home in the 90th minute to claim a morale-boosting victory just days after Rangers crashed to a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Emirates Cup. "It was a nice to way to end the game," said Weir. "You want to play all the time because this is the stage of the season where you get your fitness. This was a good result but we don't read anything into it. "It's a confidence booster to beat a side like Manchester City but that doesn't mean we think we are as fantastic - just as we didn't think we were terrible losing to Arsenal on Sunday." While money remains tight at Rangers and Walter Smith has yet to add to his squad ahead of the new campaign, Mark Hughes handed starting roles to summer signings Gareth Barry, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure and is pleased with how his new-look side is knitting together. He said: "We have a lot of different players into the club and there have been a lot of changes right through the club at all levels so it sometimes takes time to settle down. "It's still early days, we are getting people back from injuries. It takes time to build relationships in teams. We are still in that process. "We are grateful for this game because that will bring us on leaps and bounds and we are looking to improve further at the weekend. "I'm pleased with how pre-season has gone. We have had the right level of games at the right time in terms of fitness. "Results-wise, they don't really matter. We lost the game at the end because we switched off at a set-play but those things will be addressed when we get together and people are given the right jobs." City have strengthened while rivals such as Manchester United and Liverpool have lost key players over the summer. Hughes added: "We have said we are going to try to do the best we can and when everyone is fit and well we have a good squad. "What we have to do is make sure we have the right approach and the right mentality for every opponent we come up against. If we have that, then with our talent and ability we will beat more teams than we lose to."
