January transfer activity at Fir Park

Our manager has not had much time to kick his heels since his arrival at the start of the transfer window. It is possible that there will be more shuffling of dressing room pegs before the end of the day. Here's a summary of the activity so far. Jordan Halsman Jordan was on loan with Annan for the first half of the season and returned to Fir Park for a few days before moving out to Dumbarton for the rest of the season.   Gavin Gunning Number 22 in our squad is now Gavin Gunning, a 20 year old left sided defender who joined on loan from Blackburn.  He is seen as cover for both centre and left back positions. Chris Humphrey The speedy winger agreed to extend his stay and signed an extension that will keep him at Fir Park until the summer of 2013. Steve Jones McCall signed his first former player when Steve Jones joined on loan until the end of the season.  The Walsall winger and former NI internationalist had played for our manager in 2008/9.  Mike Grella (nearly!) The club announced on January 20 that we had signed the Leeds United striker Mike Grella on loan until the end of the season.  Unfortunately the move was blocked because of a FIFA regulation that prohibits a player appearing for more than two clubs in a season.  He had been on loan at Carlisle but also had half an hour in a Leeds’ jersey.  As a result the loan of Robert McHugh to Partick Thistle was abruptly cancelled. Mark Reynolds The long expected loss of Reynolds happened on the 15 January.  Mark was on his way for a medical in Sheffield while the team played Inverness.  He made over two hundred appearances for us and has the best wishes of Motherwell fans for his spell with Wednesday.  It was reported that we received £150,000 in compensation. Marc Fitzpatrick Marc had been given a short term deal by Craig Brown and he was offered an extension to keep him with us until the end of the season.  Following his ten year relationship with Motherwell he made what turned out to be his last appearance in the cup tie in Dundee and choose to take up a longer contract with Ross County. Alan Gow The month started with the departure of Alan Gow.  His six month contract had come to an end but manager McCall took the view that his wages could be better used elsewhere.  He scored one goal while at Fir Park, the winner in a League Cup game against Dundee United.  He signed up with Notts County within a week.
