No Richard Dunnde deal for Arsenal - The Insider

Villa do need to recoup cash as they look to spend £24m on Darren Bent and manager Gerard Houllier is keen to bring in at least one more defender with Montpellier's Emir Spahic and Blackburn's Chris Samba among his targets. Yet the money Arsenal would offer for Dunne would barely scratch the surface on their outlay. Montpellier may deal at around £5m for Spahic, 30, who had interested Arsenal in the summer but Blackburn want £10m for Samba. Cash plus players has been discussed but Dunne doesn't want to go to Blackburn. As revealed by Sportsmail last week, Liverpool like the Dutch midfielder and he has good friends within their dressing room but a move remains unlikely.Tottenham have also shown interest but were put off by Bayern Munich's desire for a £2.75m fee. Liverpool showed an initial interest in the33 year-old but made it clear they would have to offload bodies from their midfield first before considering taking on another ageing player. Van Bommel may be better than they have but the policy at Anfield now is to invest more wisely with sell-on value and quality at the fore. Ajax striker Luis Suarez and Aston Villa winger Ashley Young remain more realistic and necessary targets. Although he is ineligible for Europe he could still play a big part in Tottenham's assault on the Premier League title and Champions League qualification. The deal is not cheap - particularly for a 31-year-old - but Sevilla have shown a willingness to deal and have considered loaning him out with view to a permanent transfer in the summer. That was initially discussed as the player's wife had expressed a desire to return to Brazil but sources at Sevilla confirm that a similar offer from England would be considered. Spurs don't have the best history with Sevilla but the player's handlers do. Harry Redknapp, though, has other targets of course. Cole is the first to admit he has not had the best time of his career at Liverpool. There is talk of his family being unsettled in the north and that has encouraged West Ham to consider bringing him back, appeasing growing unrest among fans in the process.However, England international Cole has been one of the victims in a year of great change at Liverpool. It has not been a happy camp and niggling injuries and an early suspension have spoiled his progress. Manager Kenny Dalglish is keen to bring the best out of him knowing he could prove a big asset over coming months and Cole is being encouraged by team-mates to stick with it. The player himself wants to show he can fit into the side with Dalglish now in charge and prove the doubters wrong.
