Blood Red: Roy Hodgson struggles to grasp the Liverpool FC way

THE apology delivered at Melwood yesterday was welcome but it will take a lot more than that for Roy Hodgson to start building bridges with disillusioned supporters. The Liverpool boss made a major error of judgement after Wednesday night's horror show against Wolves when he bemoaned the absence of 'the famous Anfield support' during his reign and urged 'fans to become supporters'.For those who had shelled out the best part of £40 to witness one of the worst performances in the club's recent history it was the ultimate slap in the face. The sarcastic chants of 'Hodgson for England' from The Kop were unprecedented from supporters who have always stuck by their managers through thick and thin. It's not the Liverpool Way to stick the knife in publicly but then there has been nothing Liverpool-like about the succession of desperate displays fans have had to endure.Of course Hodgson is right to point out he was on dodgy ground to start with. Many fans didn't want Rafa Benitez to go and when he did there was a groundswell of opinion to give the job to the legendary Kenny Dalglish. Hodgson's appointment was greeted with indifference and since July he's been haemorrhaging support. But the fact six months on he's unloved and unwanted by so many isn't down to any fans' affections for former occupiers of the Anfield hot-seat, it's down to the miserable stream of results. The former Fulham boss can moan about not being accepted but he's done nothing to convince anyone he's the right man for the job - presiding over the club's worst start to a season for over half a century.
