Huddersfield boss Lee Clark was left to bemoan the way in which his side lost their way at St Mary`s having taken the lead against promotion rivals Southampton.
Lee Novak`s opener came with 15 minutes on the clock but Saints hit back with two quickfire goals around the half-hour mark, before Radhi Jaidi and Richard Chaplow adding a third and fourth for the home side after the break to inflict a 4-1 defeat.
Clark said: "Southampton are a very good side but it is a disappointing result because we started very well, we looked sharp and played some good football.
"But after a very good 20 minutes at the start of the game, we lost our way a bit.
"This is a very tough place to come but after starting so well I thought we could get something more out of the game.
"We are still well placed but we need to retain our intensity."
