Brewers miss penalty but take two goal lead into break: H-T - Burton Albion 2 Southend United 0

A Jacques Maghoma strike and an own goal from Luke Prosser deep into first half injury time place the Brewers in a commanding position at the break even though they missed a penalty! Blues boss Paul Sturrock made four changes to his last starting line-up sometime in the past when we played Stevenage with the surprise inclusion of 18-year-old Alex Woodyard making his debut. A happy Ricky Duncan there.Alex will join Craig Easton in the centre of midfield instead of the banned Anthony Grant. Defender Chris Barker returns after a six week absence with a calf injury and he is joined in central defence by Luke Prosser. When will Luggy learn, not that we had much choice! They replace the suspended Peter Gilbert and Bilel Mohsni while the final, and not unsurprising change comes upfront where top scorer Barry Corr pushes Oxford loanee Jack Midson back to the bench. Both teams started lively enough with QPR loanee celebrating staying a Shrimper for a further month by getting involved in the action from the start, fouling and getting cauught offside within seconds of each other! It was the home side who looked the more likely though and after 12 minutes Graham Coughlan was adjudged to have fouled James Collins in the box. The Burton striker stood up, dusted himself down, and missed. A let off for the Blues who were not able to take advantage of this early Christmas gift.  Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Coughlan, Prosser, Barker, Simpson, Woodyard, Easton, Soares, Corr, German. Subs: Evans, Ferdinand, Herd, Hall, Crawford, Midson, Sturrock.
