John Terry vows to help Chelsea get back to winning ways
John Terry has had his fill of being a frustrated spectator as Chelsea have faltered in his absence and has vowed to lead the club back to winning ways after declaring himself fit to face Everton. Speaking in a recent interview with Sportsmail, Terry expressed his concerns he could be sidelined for months due to a nerve problem in his thigh. Frustrated spectator: John Terry But Terry has delivered a timely boost to his manager Carlo Ancelotti by confirming he intends to skipper Chelsea tomorrow after responding well to treatment by renowned chiropractor Dr Jean-Pierre Meersseman in Italy and London-based specialist Kevin Lidlow. Never the best of patients, Terry has found his time on the treatment table all the more annoying as he watched Chelsea blow a four-point lead at the top of the table and pick up just one point from a possible nine since he last played. Terry conceded Chelsea have not met their own very high standards of late and is itching to get back on the pitch to provide the kind of leadership that has been lacking. 'We have dropped too many points recently,' said Terry. 'Looking back, only two or three weeks ago we were so many points clear and in the goal difference as well. Now both gaps have been closed. 'At times you need to work hard and push for your luck. It's not going to be given to you in life and sometimes you need to make your own if it's not happening for you. 'We need to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later. I think overall defensively, in midfield and attack, we've not been as good as we should have been. That's because we set our standards so high and started the season so well.' Good impression: Barca coach Pep Guardiola Chelsea are also set to welcome back Michael Essien from suspension against Everton, the Ghana international has also shaken-off a toe problem, while Frank Lampard is targeting the top-of-the-table clash against Manchester United in a fortnight for his long-awaited return. 'By the looks of things we are getting two or three players back,' said Terry. 'I have trained the last couple of days and Frank is not too far away. Hopefully Michael will return at the weekend.' Terry's return is all the more welcome given Brazil defender Alex will out for up to eight weeks after keyhole surgery on his knee in his home country this week. The recent run of bad results coupled with the furore caused by the controversial departure of Ray Wilkins has raised speculation over Ancelotti's future at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's admiration for the work Pep Guardiola has done at Barcelona is unlikely to have gone unnoticed by Ancelotti. Neither has it gone unnoticed in the Nou Camp corridors of power, hence club president Sandro Rosell's eagerness to extend Guardiola's contract, which expires next summer, sooner rather than later. A series of meetings between Guardiola and his advisers and Barca's board are planned for this month with a view to tying up a deal next month. Rosell is keen for Guardiola to be his manager for the entirety of his presidency and therefore would like the man who masterminded Monday's 5-0 destruction of Real Madrid to commit to a five-year contract. Guardiola, however, is understood to want some more room for manoeuvre and is unlikely to want to sign anything longer than a three-year deal.
