Liverpool FC's Dr Peter Brukner insists Jamie Carragher surgery is 'safe option'

Dr Peter Brukner. Liverpool FC's new head of sports science 300LIVERPOOL'S head of sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner insists sending Jamie Carragher for surgery on his dislocated left shoulder is "the best option".The Reds were rocked yesterday by the news that the inspirational centre-back is set to be out for three months with the injury he suffered in the closing stages of last Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.Initially, it was hoped Carragher would only be sidelined for a month but scans revealed significant damage to the joint. As a result the 32-year-old will have keyhole surgery on Friday and is unlikely to be back playing until late February. Brukner says the procedure will drastically reduce the chances of Carragher suffering the same injury again.'In the 24 hours after Sunday's game we got as much information about the injury as we could,' he said.'We got a number of specialist opinions on the best way to go forward. We have involved Jamie in all the discussions and we've decided to go ahead with some keyhole surgery.'We decided it was the best option because not having the surgery leaves you with a very high risk of the dislocation happening again - probably more than 50%.'We weren't prepared to take that risk. Having the surgery doesn't completely mean you're not at risk of dislocating, but the risk is down to about 10%.'With Jamie and Roy and the medical staff we decided to take the safe option, and then he'll be right for the last third of the season.'
