Alexander reveals coaching ambition

eil Alexander has revealed his hopes of landing a coaching job at Rangers when he hangs up his gloves. The goalkeeper, 32, signed a new deal on Thursday that keeps him at Ibrox until 2013 and he hopes to have a part to play during that time despite acknowledging he is likely to remain as second choice to Allan McGregor for the time being. But he is already looking to the future and would love a career in coaching one day, admitting goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart's role would be his dream job.Alexander said: "I've learned from all the coaches here. You learn from people like Ally McCoist, Ian Durrant and Kenny McDowall - everybody."You learn different things, not always goalkeeping, just in general. I'm a lot wiser and a bit more experienced."I'm taking my coaching badges as well and I'd like to become a goalkeeping coach and so it's great to be working with Jim Stewart every day and I'm learning from the best."I joke about it every day and say I'm going to take his job. I always look to the future and it's something I'd love to do."If it was at Rangers, it would be amazing."With renewed speculation about Manchester United's interest in McGregor, Alexander could be given his chance as number one sooner than expected if another club did swoop for his team-mate.But he insisted reports over McGregor's future were not the motivation behind his new contract.Alexander said: "This contract is about myself and what is good for me and my family."My family are very settled and happy and I thought another three years here would be perfect for me."I've had a lot of success in the games I've played and I want more of that."Who knows what's around the corner? I've just got to keep thinking I might be playing and prepare right just in case for that day I might get a run in the team."Alexander insists no-one at Rangers wants to witness McGregor's departure - including himself - but has no doubt about his ability to play at the highest level. He said: "I've stated many, many times how good I think Allan is."I don't think he would struggle but we are happy to have him here at Rangers."We want to keep our best players, it makes the club better and makes us win more."
