Martyn Woolford fired home a late winner for spirited Scunthorpe to turn up the heat on Darren Ferguson as they claimed a 3-2 victory over Preston.
The Iron drew first blood in the battle of the npower Championship strugglers when Chris Dagnall opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a speculative low shot.
North End were booed off at the break but responded with two goals in six second-half minutes to move into a 2-1 lead.
Craig Morgan claimed the first, rising highest to convert Paul Parry's corner, before Billy Jones fired home a sizzling 12-yard effort.
But if they thought they would run out comfortable winners, they were badly mistaken as Michael O'Connor restored parity with a wonderful free-kick.
And the dramatic encounter was settled as Woolford tapped home the winner with eight minutes remaining to leave Preston with just one home win all season.
