No Swiss role for Ledley

Joe Ledley has withdrawn from the Wales squad to face Switzerland next week in a European Championship qualifier for personal reasons. The Celtic midfielder has been allowed to miss the clash in Basel on compassionate leave as his partner is expecting their first child.Ledley's absence leaves Wales caretaker boss Brian Flynn with even more selection problems with Chris Gunter and Sam Ricketts both missing through suspension.Flynn appreciates why Ledley has returned to Glasgow to be with his partner at the birth."It is a big occasion for them both," said Flynn. "Joe is one of my experienced players but I feel it is necessary we do give him that compassionate leave."Hal Robson-Kanu, who came on as a late substitute in the 1-0 defeat at the Cardiff City Stadium, has also withdrawn after a recurrence of a hamstring injury.Flynn has bolstered his numbers by calling up Bournemouth defender Rhoys Wiggins and Swansea midfield pair Shaun MacDonald, currently on loan at Yeovil, and Jazz Richards.Joe Allen and Ched Evans, who missed the Bulgaria game after returning to their clubs for treatment on hamstring injuries, will not be rejoining the squad. The changes leave Flynn to travel a 22-man party for the must-win game in Basle.Experienced international strikers Craig Bellamy and Rob Earnshaw were already missing.Wales are without a point in Group G after two defeats from as many matches and, with England lying in wait as well as Switzerland, their hopes of qualification are slender.Flynn also has just the Swiss clash remaining to prove his suitability for the job full-time.The 54-year-old former Wrexham and Swansea boss was appointed on a short-term basis for the October fixtures after the departure of John Toshack last month.Ashley Williams, the man Flynn named captain in Bellamy's absence, admits the team owe it to the caretaker boss to perform."We have probably let ourselves and everyone involved down, not just him," said the Swansea defender, who himself must shake off a foot injury."We would have liked to have got a win for him to repay him for the week we've had. We've thoroughly enjoyed it."We were desperate to get a win and were all looking forward to the game. I'm so disappointed."We have got to try to get three points in Switzerland and then see where we are."Williams, who endured some uncomfortable moments in a midfield holding role against Bulgaria, could revert to a more accustomed position in central defence. The absence of Ricketts for two yellow cards and Gunter for a red will force a reshuffle of the back line. Cardiff's Darcy Blake could also be in a line for a debut.
