Lafferty has long way to go - McCoist

Ally McCoist watched Kyle Lafferty net his first hat-trick for Rangers and claimed the player is finally beginning to realise his potential. Lafferty has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the past but was on top form as the holders began their defence of the Co-operative Insurance Cup with a 7-2 win over Dunfermline at Ibrox on Tuesday night. But, despite seeing signs of improvement, Gers assistant boss McCoist has told Lafferty he still has a long way to go before he can claim to be the finished article and must be willing to learn along the way."I thought his third goal was first class and hopefully he can kick on from here," McCoist said."He's much talked about but he wants to do well and, if he listens, he's got a chance. Circumstances will dictate if he plays but if he scores goals like that every week he's got a chance."Don't forget, he has scored a lot of important goals for us. When Kyle first came up he was a raw talent and he is far from being the finished product."He's a good boy and he wants to do well and learn and I can certainly see progress. But Kyle knows there is a heck of a long way to go."As well as Lafferty's strikes, Nikica Jelavic bagged a double and Madjid Bougherra and Steven Naismith helped themselves to a goal apiece.Callum Woods and Joe Cardle netted for the Pars but the Irn-Bru First Division side never looked like causing any real problems for their hosts.McCoist added: "The positives tonight were the standard of the goals, they were out of this world and some of them were fantastic."There were one or two negatives as well, I thought the goals we lost were poor. But maybe I'm nit-picking as it was a great result."Dunfermline manager Jim McIntyre admitted poor defending cost his side on the night but believes Rangers also deserve credit for being so clinical in front of goal.He said: "We asked the boys at half-time to show courage, see where it takes us and try to get the next goal."We did that but then we committed the cardinal sin and gave away the next goal. That deflated us. When a team scores seven goals, you've got to give them credit."Even in the last 10 minutes they were still pushing forward and trying to create and that says a lot. From our point of view, we need to look at the goals we gave away and that was a sore point."
