In an FA Cup 4th round tie an Anfield in January 1958, Billy Liddell opened the scoring on 28 minutes and a Ben Collins own goal and late Louis Bimpson strike gave the Reds a comfortable 3-1 win. Liverpool were later knocked out in the 6th round of the Cup after losing 2-1 to Blackburn at Ewood Park.In the early 1960s, Northampton shot up through the divisions and reached the top flight for the first and only time in 1965/66. Town didn't fare too well with the big boys despite beating Aston Villa home and away, eventually finishing second from bottom while Liverpool were crowned champions. Northampton did grind out a 0-0 at home to Liverpool in April 1966, but were thrashed 5-0 at Anfield the previous November. Five different players got on the scoresheet in the rout - Ian St John put the Reds in front on six minutes, Willie Stevenson doubled the lead from the spot after 17, Roger Hunt made it three before the break, and Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson scored within two minutes of each other in the second half. The Reds also made a non-competitive trip to the County Ground for Dave Bowen's testimonial in November 1976, where honours were even in a 2-2 draw with goals from Ian Callaghan and Emlyn Hughes for Liverpool.
