Lennon Laments Low Resources

Having the drag players from their sick bed is not a good look Danny Lennon refused to use his lack of striking options as an excuse after his St Mirren side again failed to pick up a league point on their travels. Lennon was forced to field a struggling Gareth Wardlaw as a lone frontman for the 2-1 defeat against St Johnstone as his other four strikers were unavailable. Wardlaw, who had been in bed for most of the week through illness, missed a great chance to equalise but Lennon was more concerned about his side's defending at McDiarmid Park. Lennon knew he could not count on the injured Michael Higdon, Craig Dargo and Paul McQuade before Paul McGowan earned himself a suspension by swinging a punch at Kilmarnock defender Manuel Pascali in their previous away defeat. The former Cowdenbeath manager said: "Players have to realise that it doesn't just hurt you on the day of the game, it hurts you for the next game or two. I'm not going to make excuses about players missing. All the players I'm missing are strikers and that's the hardest part of the game, scoring goals. But one thing we're not lacking is defenders and we're not defending. That's my big worry and that's my question to them." Wardlaw revealed his struggles after a hard-working but fruitless performance. The former Raith Rovers and Ayr player said: "It's been a tough week because I've had a viral infection, so I've been in my bed from Sunday to Thursday. I had a light session on Friday and just tried to get it through the game. It was hard and I'm done in now. We had no other options and I just had to get on with it and get through it." St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes praised his players for refusing to let the turn of events in the 36th minute derail their momentum as they secured their first SPL win of the season. McInnes said: "You know what' it's like, it should be 3-0 and we should be out of sight but then we lose a deflected goal. Sometimes you think, and the supporters think, it's not going to be our day and you can start feeling sorry for ourselves. But the most important people didn't seem to let it affect them, the players, they kept battling. At times we looked like a really good side. I thought last week we played like individuals but played poorly. This week we played like a proper team with a lot of good individual performances within it. The biggest thing was the effort and commitment to get the three points." Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba net)This is ScottishFitba Net
