Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits failure in attempt to sign David Villa

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has conceded he wanted to sign Valencia's David Villa but was beaten to the World Cup star by Barcelona. United's spending has been frugal in comparison to recent years, but Ferguson denied the club weren't able to afford the £40m-rated player, just that the Catalans moved faster to complete the deal. He said: 'We have no financial restrictions. If I hadn't been confident of value for money in the market we maybe would have done something. Hands off: Fergie admits that Villa was his No 1 target this summer'I looked around and there was only one player I would have brought here. But that move was sealed off quite early by the club he went to.'Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe have been the new players to arrive at Old Trafford, and Fergie believes the £25 he's spent on the trio is sufficient to continue United's push for the Champions League. But the Scotsman admits the club will need to inject more cash into new players as the old guard of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville finally retire. Ferguson said: 'I don't think we're at the point where we have to go overboard. There may be a time in the next couple of years where we have to stretch ourselves.'We'd need to get really top players in to galvanise the younger players coming through. That's a possibility.' No regrets!
