Got any ID, David? Beckham (34) refused drink by irate waiter
David Beckham had been warned to expect a backlash on his return to America - and has already shunned by a waiter who refused to serve him alcohol.
Beckham is due to return to MLS action for the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 16 and was dining at a steakhouse with team-mates when the waiter asked the 34-year-old for some identification.
Unable to produce any, the former Manchester United star had his glass of wine taken away.
Beckham's LA team-mate Landon Donovan has questioned the England international's commitment and many fans are furious after his extended sabbatical with AC Milan.
And when the waiter at the restaurant in Washington told him: 'No ID, no wine,' Beckham replied: 'Is this guy taking the p***?'
Despite having 110 caps and nearing the end of his playing career, the server at the restaurant was seemingly not satisfied that Beckham was over 21.
As an argument ensued the waiter claimed that he 'didn't care who he was' but, after a brief discussion with the midfielder's bodyguard, he allowed Beckham to have his drink back.
To add insult to injury, his team-mates had spent more than the $30-a-head meal allowance they receive so Becks, who earns about £5million a year, had to put his hand in his pocket to cover the extras.
Beckham has also been hit by a stinging attack from team-mate Donovan for not putting the Galaxy first.
The USA striker said: 'When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing. But somewhere along the way he just flipped a switch and said "Uh-uh, I'm not doing it any more". My sense is that David thinks it's a joke.
'All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us. If someone's paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you're suspended or not.
'Show up and train hard. Show up and play hard. Maybe he's not a leader, maybe he's not a captain. Fair enough. But at a minimum you should bust your ass every day.
'That hasn't happened. And I don't think that's too much for us to expect. Especially when he's brought all this on us.
'I can't even say he's a good team-mate any more. He's not shown
that. I can't think of another guy where I'd say he wasn't a good team-mate, he didn't give everything through all this, he didn't still care.
'If that's the way he's going to be, fine, then hold him accountable. Bench him. Just say, "We're not going to play you, we don't think you're committed".'
