Capello admits mistakes, but happy with effort

Fabio Capello, the England coach, is confident he can show those who said he should be sacked after a disappointing World Cup that he is good enough to coach England. The Italian enjoyed a glittering career in club management, but the Three Lions are his first spell with an international side. Although England reached the World Cup finals with a 100 per cent winning record, displays in South Africa were disappointing and they were defeated by Germany in the second round. There was also the controversial Capello Index rating system - a website which promised his ratings of England players after games - and concern over the manner in which he told players they were not in his tournament squad. Tabloid speculation suggested Capello could be sacked by the Football Association, and England opened their European Championship qualifying campaign with a 4-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday night. The performance was impressive, but Capello knows that even another complete winning record on the way to the finals in Poland and Ukraine would not completely silence his critics - only good displays in the tournament finals in 2012 would achieve that. "When I started my career as a player I had a lot of big injuries. When I was 20 the newspapers said I was finished," he said. "I worked really hard and stayed strong. This time it is the same. When you [journalists] shave in the morning you have to look in the mirror and ask is what you wrote about this man correct or not. "I can't change what people write. I understand it has to be done. I look at myself and I am sure what I brought was good. I try to do my job really well but sometimes I make mistakes."
