Cherries: McQuoid vows to get even better

Cherries' man of the moment Josh McQuoid lit up Dean Court with a delightful double and then gave fans a tantalising glimpse of the future by insisting: I never want to stop improving. The emerging star enhanced his reputation as a potent attacking threat by bagging a clinical brace in Saturday's thrilling 3-3 draw against Notts County. McQuoid's strikes, which were followed by a neat Anton Robinson finish, handed Cherries a commanding 3-0 lead as they looked set to continue their winning League One form. The visitors hit back, though, and snatched an unlikely point when Kevin Smith struck with virtually the final kick of an absorbing encounter. But despite the dramatic finale, most supporters are likely to have been discussing McQuoid as they made their way home. The homegrown forward showed predatory instincts to open the scoring from close range, before his sizzling pace caught out the visiting defence on route to a finely-taken second goal. And the 20-year-old, who has waited patiently for regular first-team football, is keen to hang on to his place after coming into the side following Brett Pitman's transfer. He told the Echo: It's not my first position but, if I keep playing well, then hopefully I can keep my place up there. I can play a number of positions but out wide is the main position I've been working on over the past couple of years. Eddie (Howe) has been really good with me there and helping and teaching me new stuff, so I think that's my first position, but I'm willing to play anywhere as long as I'm in the team. I feel confident up front and feel like I can do a job for the team. When asked if there was more to come following Saturday's eye-catching display, the local lad said: Yes, definitely. I never want to stop improving. I think there's a lot of my game I need to improve, but that depends what position I'm playing. I'll keep working on both (striker and winger) and keep working hard. In the wake of Pitman's departure, McQuoid is keen to avoid any comparisons as he bids to become a top performer in his own right. He added: I've never been trying to replace anyone and I'll still play my own game and do what I do best. I don't want to be compared to him. He's a great player and we've seen over the years what he's done he's scored great goals and was a massive part of us. But we've got to play differently now. I think we've got to score more as a team, from midfield, from the back and from the front. Part of that lies on my shoulders and, as long as I keep playing well, hopefully they will come. Brett was a different player to me. I'll just keep doing what I do and keep working on my game with Eddie. From the past couple of seasons that he's been here, he's improved me massively and I thank him for that.
