Young: Give MacDonald the Villa job

uke Young is hoping Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald becomes Martin O'Neill's successor at Villa Park. Young's first-half goal proved enough to beat Everton as Villa bounced back from a 6-0 thrashing at Newcastle and a Europa League exit against Rapid Vienna.MacDonald has yet to decide if he wants to be considered for the job but Young told Sky Sports 1: "The boys respect Kev. He's got great football knowledge and we all think he can do the job."It's up to Kev whether he puts his name forward. We will have to see what happens in the coming week."Petrov echoed Young's views on MacDonald and is keen for an end to the uncertainty over O'Neill's permanent successor."It (uncertainty) has not helped but we just need to go out and perform. We think he (MacDonald) deserves the job and we hope that he takes it."Young admitted Villa had been determined to put the recent setbacks behind them against Everton and although the Merseysiders dominated for long periods Villa defended with determination."For the last 10 or 15 minutes they were camped in our half but we dug in and got our win."We were disappointed to lose by six goals against Newcastle when we let ourselves down a bit and then we went out in Europe in midweek. We just had to pick ourselves up and today we put bodies on the line."MacDonald did not want to be drawn on whether or not he will put himself forward for the job when he speaks to owner Randy Lerner. He said: "It's a little bit early to say. I will be in training tomorrow morning and if Mr Lerner is in I'll speak to him then."You are very much in the spotlight as a manager. If I decide I want an interview, get an interview and get the job the spotlight is something I would have to accept."The most important thing for me is to get on the training ground with top quality players and work with them."Everton boss David Moyes was frustrated that his side could not turn dominance into goals."I can't believe we lost it," he said. "I thought from first minute to last we were in control of the game."We have to give Aston Villa a lot of credit for how they defended."We have been playing well but not scoring goals. I have no complaints about the players today. They went about their jobs excellently but we just cannot get the ball in the net at the moment."I think the players are playing well enough to win games. We are just lacking a bit in the final third of the pitch."
