McInnes reveals Weiss near miss

Derek McInnes has revealed ahead of St Johnstone's trip to Rangers how close he came to signing Vladimir Weiss on loan last season. Rangers signed Weiss on a season-long loan from Manchester City before the trip to Hibernian last Sunday and the wenger impressed as a second-half substitute in the 3-0 win.He is likely to be in the side against Saints on Saturday and McInnes will be keeping a close eye on him having nearly signed the Slovakia international himself last summer."We might have got Weiss for last season," he said."I had watched him in a few reserve games down south and spoke to his agent who indicated that he might want to go on loan."I spoke to Mark Hughes' assistant, Eddie Niedzwiecki, whom I know, and Man City were keen for him to go on loan to get regular football."They didn't want him to go to the Championship in case he didn't get a game because that would have defeated the purpose."But we had just came up from the First Division and he would have got a game for us."But Man City were going on a tour of South Africa and had a few injuries so they took him."By all accounts Weiss did well over there and I got a call from Eddie saying the manager wanted to hold onto him."He is an even better player now. He has played in the Premier League and in a World Cup."So we are well aware of him but Rangers have match-winners all over the pitch."Kenny Miller, James Beattie, Steven Naismith and Lee McCulloch can all chip in with goals so we can't concentrate on one player."McInnes understands why people will make Rangers favourites to take three points - because he would do it himself if he was outside looking in."I have done it myself when looking at Rangers and Celtic's fixtures at home. I have written the other team off," he said."I know everyone will be thinking it will be a home win by two or three nil."But we are representing St Johnstone and we have to be confident enough in our own ability and try to prove people wrong."We have to show were are not just going there to fulfil the fixture."We need strong characters but I think we have that in our dressing room."
