Roberto Martinez is lining up his first signing as Wigan manager after making a move for Espanyol midfielder Jordi Gomez.
The 24-year-old playmaker is well known to the Spaniard, who took him to Swansea on a year-long loan last season.
Gomez scored 14 goals for the Swans in the Coca-Cola Championship and Martinez believes he can be a success in the Barclays Premier League.
Reports in Spain suggest a £1.7million fee has been agreed for the Catalan, who came through the Barcelona youth set-up and later played in the `B' team before moving to city rivals Espanyol two years ago.
However, negotiations are at a very early stage and the player has yet to discuss terms with the Latics.
