Derby striker Varney poised for loan switch

Derby are on the brink of agreeing a deal for striker Luke Varney to go out on a season-long loan. QPR and Varney's former club Charlton are interested in signing the 27-year-old, but other clubs are also keen. "It is getting very close to a deal being done," said boss Nigel Clough. "It will probably be a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. There are just a few loose ends to tie up." Varney, whose contract runs to 2012, is one of Derby`s biggest earners but he spent the majority of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. Varney joined Derby on a permanent deal in January 2009, a few days before Clough became manager.
