Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder has criticised the club for paying £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Germany international believes such extravagant spending during the global economic crisis was unnecessary.
The 28-year-old former Borussia Dortmund man is the first Real player to speak out against Ronaldo's huge transfer fee.
Metzelder said: 'I don't know much about this evolution, and I am quite worried about it.
'Spending 96 million euros on someone that can get injured or be in a bad form isn't correct to me, especially during this period [of financial uncertainty].'
