McAvennie urges Bhoys to move fast for boss Mowbray

Celtic powerbrokers Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell were last night urged to settle compensation quickly with West Brom before handing new manager Tony Mowbray a substantial transfer budget. Leading the calls for an end to the protracted negotiations to replace Gordon Strachan was Parkhead legend Frank McAvennie, who demanded the club 'sort out' the deal in order to aid preparations for the huge challenge of Champions League qualification. West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace continued to stonewall all inquiries on the issue amid suggestions that Celtic could secure Mowbray for£1million because of a clause in his Hawthorns contract although the English club are holding out for double that figure. Former Celtic midfielder Peter Grant is ultimately expected to join Mowbray back at Parkhead, with Neil Lennon staying on in a coaching role. That may leave no place for Mark Venus, who was Mowbray's assistant at Hibs and West Brom. With the next few days proving crucial as Celtic battle to secure their new manager, Mowbray could yet be forced to walk out on West Brom and away from a contract that still has two years to run.
