Arsenal legend David Seaman dismisses club's title hopes

Arsenal great David Seaman has dismissed the Gunners' hopes of winning the title this season, but has urged fans to stay behind manager Arsene Wenger.Seaman believes the Londoners lack the consistency needed to challenge champions Chelsea and Manchester United. He said: 'I'm desperate for Arsenal to do well, but they need to be moreconsistent. They've got to play ugly at times, sneak a few results whenthey're not playing well. Arsenal legend: Seaman helping out during training last season'I wouldn't say the title race is as unpredictable as people seem tobe saying. Chelsea and United are still the best, the rest are playingcatch-up. They've both got a really good blend of youth and experience.'Still the main man: Arsenal boss WengerSeaman, who played for Arsenal between 1990 and 2003, knows all aboutwinning titles. He helped the Gunners to win the league in 1991 underGeorge Graham, and then twice more under Wenger. So who does he think will emerge as title winners this time round? 'I thinkUnited will win it,' he said. 'They are so strong in their squad.'They've got a good mixture. Theolder players like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have still got loads tooffer, and there's some really good young players there too.'Despite his fears for Arsenal's title hopes, not to mention fivetrophyless seasons, Seaman did back the club's decision to award Wengerwith a new threeyear deal.He said: 'He's by far the best manager I've had. He will getit right again.'He's built the ground, the training ground. Now he wants trophies. I can see him winning them.'Seaman also admitted he could see why Wenger is attracted by signing a proven goalkeeper like Mark Schwarzer or Shay Given, but is concerned as to how it will affect Arsenal's current custodians. Bound for Arsenal? Mark Schwarzer was on Fulham's bench for their clash with BoltonWenger has been strongly linked with a move for Schwarzer, who didn't play in Fulham's Premier League opener at Bolton. And reports have suggested Shay Given could be tempted by a movedown south, particularly after Joe Hart played instead of him inManchester City's opening game against Tottenham.Seaman can see the value of bringing in one of them, saying: 'Itwill be a good move. If goalkeepers of that quality become available, you can see why Arsene wants to look at it.'What's going to happen to Arsenal's keepers though? What's going to happen to (Lukasz) Fabianski's progress? How will it affect (Manuel) Almunia's confidence?'Neither had a good end to the season, and it cost us. But do yougive them another chance? It's hard, I've worked with both of them andI know what they're capable of.'The trend though is for teams to go with big experienced internationals in goal.'The long-serving goalkeeper watched Wenger's men with interest as they played their first match of the season against Liverpool on Sunday. The visitors had to rely on a late Pepe Reina own goal to earn a point, but Seaman said there were promising signs at Anfield.'Arsenal deserved a point,' he said. 'They were comfortable in possession, and played pretty well in a tough first game.'David Seaman was speaking at the launch of Yahoo!'s online Barclays Premier League highlights - all the best bits from every Premier League game this season.
