McClaren linked with Hamburg job after former Spurs boss Jol heads to Ajax

Former England manager Steve McClaren is on the shortlist to replace Martin Jol at German side Hamburg. Jol, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager, resigned earlier this week to return to his Dutch homeland and take over at Ajax. McClaren has made a positive impression during his first season in charge of FC Twente, leading them to second place in the Dutch Leagueand the Cup final, where they lost in a penalty shoot-out to Heerenveen. While McClaren is happy in Holland, he may consider working in the more competitive Bundesliga a step up as he rebuilds his career following his sacking as England boss in the wake of failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
