Giovanni Trapattoni to miss Ireland against Argentina as Italian boss is kept in hospital

Absent: Trapattoni will miss the Argentina clashRepublic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni will undergo minor abdominal surgery this afternoon, which will cause him to miss tonight's friendly against Argentina.Tests on the 71-year-old Italian coach have revealed he is suffering abdominal pain as a result of minor scar tissue from a previous operation. He will have another operation today to relieve pain he has been suffering since Sunday.Trapattoni was taken to Mater Hospital in Dublin in the early hours of Tuesday morning after complaining of sickness and suffering vomiting for several days. The former Italy and Juventus coach put his illness down to food poisoning, revealing he had eaten shellfish before he left his home in Milan at the weekend.FAI doctor Alan Byrne took Trapattoni to hospital from the team hotel at 3am oin Tuesday morning where he has had extensive tests, scans and x-rays.He will miss the friendly against Argentina, the opening international at the re-built Lansdowne Road, now renamed the Aviva Stadium, although he did pick the Ireland side.His assistant Marco Tardelli takes charge of the team. Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne has been declared fit but Tardelli will make a late decision on Wolves striker Kevin Doyle who has missed most of his club's pre-season programme with a groin strain. Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is in Dublin and is keen to see the striker play.
