Shearer ponders future as Toon boss insists Newcastle must change 'from top to bottom'

Alan Shearer cast doubt on his Newcastle future as they slumped out of the Barclays Premier League in disarray with a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa. As Ricky Sbragia quit Sunderland and Middlesbrough dropped out of the top flight on a dramatic final day of the season, caretaker manager Shearer insisted he had not been asked to stay on. He nevertheless called for a major overhaul of the club 'from top to bottom'. Shearer also rounded on his players after a Damien Duff own goal and another poor showing consigned them to the Championship and financial meltdown. A fire sale is expected with 15 players on £50,000 a week or more and none of the squad who joined before January on relegation pay-cut clauses. The cost of the drop is estimated at £100million and Shearer, if he is to stay, will demand funds to solve Newcastle's many problems when he meets owner Mike Ashley in the next 48 hours.
