DESERVING THE DROP All four teams involved in the relegation battle lost yesterday, whichshows why they've struggled. Mike Ashley's Newcastle are down becausethey had only seven wins all season and too many bad decisions weremade too often. Who's smiling now? Ashley NICKY'S KNOW-HOW One player who was excellent yesterday and who will be central toNewcastle's future is Nicky Butt. It won't be easy to come straightback - 40 per cent of teams relegated from the Premier League havenever returned. That's a scary statistic for Toon addicts. GOODBYE RICKY Dignity from Ricky Sbragia (right) yesterday as Sunderland stumbled over the finishing line. He stood down as manager, having achieved his goal and Niall Quinn promised him a 'job for life'. They are the only North East team in the top flight now. HERE COME THE KOP Liverpool's points total was enough for second place this season, but would have secured them the Premier League title in seven of the previous seasons. If they add to their squad (Carlos Tevez?), look out for a stronger charge next time. STAYING POWER The best football news of the past week was Arsene Wenger's confirmed commitment to Arsenal; the man is a football genius and I would hate to see him leave with his job incomplete. Only a fool would want that. GOLDEN NICOLAS A fabulous goal for Nicolas Anelka at Sunderland to confirm the golden boot as top scorer. He is a class act as a striker, not always first pick, but someone who will always score goals. He is such an outstanding finisher, with ice in his veins. ONE MORE GOAL Did the fear factor win in the end, or was there better organisation and tactics? Last season we saw 1,002 goals scored in the Premier League, this season it was 60 fewer. That's some drop. One more would have saved Alan Shearer.
